What is a Connected Car?

A Connected Car is a vehicle equipped with wireless access to different safety-, infotainment- or driver assistant services such as internet access, eCall, remote software update, phone mirroring, real-time mapping, Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication and many more. These vehicles use different technologies for a certain use case, for example during maintenance software updates are going over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth®, but the internet access requires 4G/5G cellular connection, and GNSS for navigation.

Commonly known devices that turn vehicles into connected cars are Telematics Control Units (TCU), Network Access Devices (NAD), Smart Antennas, Infotainment Head Units, V2X On-board Units (OBU). These devices are similar to regular smart phones in functionality, but with automotive grade enclosure, form factor and certification process.

Connected Car Testing

What is the Complexity of Connected Car Testing?

Similar to regular smart phones, connected car devices offer dual-SIM cellular modems, with upto 4×4 MIMO antenna patterns, adding Wi-Fi, Bluetooth®, GNSS will result in 12-16 antenna ports to test, while the device also needs connection to an automotive bus (ie.: CAN, Automotive Ethernet), speakers, microphone, maybe even displays to further increase test complexity.

To test a connected car device, we need to bring the whole wireless world into the lab and production floor. For parametric testing we need multi-port, multi-standard RF (Radio Frequency) test equipment, while for functional testing the market is changing from using expensive, traditional call-boxes to more affordable, purpose built test tools, such as the IoT Test Node or Base Station Emulator.

Why choose NOFFZ

Why Choose NOFFZ for Connected Car Testing?

Our connected car solutions are built on the UTP – Universal Tester Platform, offering a unique blend of standardization and customization. This flexible platform adapts to almost any technology, providing a scalable and reliable testing solution tailored to your specific requirements.

Experience in Environmental Validation Testing: we have several years of real project experience in building test systems for lifecycle analysis of connected car devices. We have converted LV-124 requirements into physical test racks, custom built measurement equipment and automated test software to support 3600 hours long test cases under extreme environmental conditioning.
